Monday Spotlight: Geranium Essential Oil

Mondays are going to have a new feature with a spotlight on a different essential oil each week. Every essential oil is unique in its attributes and uses. Researching the oils and how to use them will educate me and hopefully provide my readers with new ideas about how to benefit from them.

There are over 700 varieties of geranium, but only a few produce essential oils.  Through steam-distillation, the entire plant (leaves, stalks, and flowers) is used to produce an oil with a sweet rosy, sometimes minty scent (Wilson, 2002).

According to Wilson, European physicians prescribe geranium essential oil to treat diarrhea, gallstones, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and to relieve respiratory problems.  Perhaps most notable is geranium's ability to balance hormones.  Not only does it stimulate the adrenal cortex (which regulates the balance of hormones secreted by other organs), but it can support women struggling with the symptoms of menopause or PMS.

Geranium essential oil is one of the best oils for almost any type of skin condition.  It promotes regeneration of skin cells and heals acne and other blemishes.  Geranium essential oil is a wonderful oil to use for its anti-aging properties--it aids in the tightening of skin and helps prevent it from becoming loose and wrinkled.  Because it stimulates the blood flow in the skin, it can help reduce or diminish the appearance of scars and is a wonderful oil to apply to minor bruises, burns, cuts, skin ulcers, and other wounds.  Wilson notes that because geranium essential oil "stimulates both the lymphatic and circulatory systems, geranium oil helps to combat the kind of sluggish circulation and waste accumulation present with cellulite, and it clears skin that is blemished or dull and dry as a result of the accumulation of toxins" (p. 76).

Emotionally, geranium essential oil eases anxiety, tension, and irritability.  Wilson writes, "Almost any stress-related condition responds to a few whiffs of it."

I use geranium oil everyday in my skin oil.  Find the recipe here.  If you are interested in diffusing geranium essential oil for some of its emotional benefits, I suggest blending it with lavender and ylang ylang in your diffuser for a calming and relaxing scent.
