Storing Your Oils

We often mention on this blog that essential oils and oil blends should be stored in glass containers. Essential oils and carrier oils won’t react with glass as they may with plastic. Essential oils can sometimes break down plastics, particularly when undiluted, that can introduce chemicals into your mixture or damage the plastic container.
  • Most experts say the darker the glass the better. UV light can degrade both the essential oil and the carrier oil.
  • Store your oils and mixtures in locations where they won’t experience dramatic temperature changes. Some people prefer to store their oils in the refrigerator to maximize their life.
  • Pure essential oils may dissolve rubber droppers or squeeze bulbs. Once diluted with a carrier oil, this is usually not an issue.
  • Orifice reducers on the top of essential oil bottles help with dispensing the oil and also protect the oil inside the bottle from exposure to air and light.
